“What are you doing here, Jules?” “I wanted to see you. We haven’t talking in a few days, and I just wanted to check in.” I laid my hands flat against the books; they offered comfort. “You should have called.” He stared off toward his desk. “Are you excepting company?” “No. It’s been a long week; I’m tired and I have a headache.” I stepped toward him, stood a few inches away, but he didn’t drop his hands. “You should let me rub your temples.” I reached up, and he grabbed my hand and stepped away. “Don’t.” “You don’t even want me to touch you?” I asked over the grapefruit size lump in my throat. “Jules, please just go.” “No. Why?” I asked. “I just want to be near you. Why is that so bad?” “It’s not bad, but I just can’t.” “Why? What is it?” “You wouldn’t understand.” “Then make me understand.” His eyes flashed, and he stepped toward me. I welcomed the warmth. His demeanor softened for a split second. I saw it. I felt it, but then it was gone, and he slumped back on the bookshelves with his chin to his chest. “I can’t,” he said. The words crushed me yet his tone scared me. I stood in front of him. He shuddered but didn’t look at me. I bent down, so I could see his eyes. “Why?” I asked. “What are you afraid of?” He lifted his head. He reached up and ran the back of his hand down my tear-soaked face. I shuddered. “I’m afraid if I tell you, if I show you what I am and what I’m truly like, then you’ll stop looking at me like that.” His hand dropped to his side. “I’d really miss that.” “How do I look at you?” I asked. I knew the answer but wanted to hear how he saw it. “Like I’m a king. You have the ultimate faith in me. I don’t deserve it.” His head dropped again. “Then earn it,” I said, my tone stronger than I felt on the inside. Inside, I felt like I might crumble any minutes if he didn’t touch me. “Oh, Julia … How?” He raised his head. I spotted a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “Keep it simple. What do you need me to do?” His eyes grew dark as he approached me. I backed up into the bookshelf, and he placed his hands on either side of my head. “Do as I say?” I nodded. My heart raced, and I was sure he could hear it thumping like crazy. He placed his hand over my heart, and I drew in a sharp breath. His fingers tapped against my sternum. “Look at me.” I turned my head up and stared into his eyes. His hands rose and surround my throat. He didn’t squeeze, but panic set in. “I’m not going to hurt you, Jules.” He pressed a little tighter. “I need you to trust me.” “Okay.” “Do you trust me?” I nodded. “Say it.” “I trust—” Before I finished the sentence, his lips were on mine.

The truth is in the pages.
As a child, K.R. Grace had an overactive imagination. When it was obvious she wasn’t going to change anytime soon, her mom shoved a pen and paper in her hand and said, “Write it down.” So, at the age of eight, her first story was born, and the writing hasn’t stopped since. When she’s not running with wolves, sleeping with bears, or flying with falcons, she can be found checking out local bands or watching movies about things that go “boo” in the night. She lives in East Tennessee with a dog that is afraid of his own shadow and a cat that was a mob leader in a former life.
Bea Paxton is a free spirit. She loves her fledgling interior design business, having fun, and she loves men. But only temporarily. Rule #1 is no relationships, no love, no commitment. She likes being in charge. It’s the only way to protect herself from getting hurt again. Zane Price is the perfect candidate for a steamy time—beautiful, built, and British. Plus, he’ll soon be moving back to England. Really perfect. Well…except for the fact that he’s her biggest client. And he doesn’t play by her rules. Hell, no. He wants more. Much more. Which is definitely not on the agenda. Unfortunately, his kisses are nothing short of toe-curlingly awesome. And he is distracting her—a lot—from doing her job. She needs to stay away from him. Her livelihood depends on it. But Zane always gets what he wants. And he wants Bea. But for right now? Or forever…?
She waited for just the right moment, pushing to her feet when she saw her opening. She was zoned in on her target, gun lifting in his direction—and was suddenly flying through the air. “Hey!” Somebody had hold of her and they were going down. She braced herself for impact with the hard ground, but landed on a firm chest instead. A chest that smelled suspiciously like…Zane Price. She was rolled off his body and found herself staring up at his face. He looked kind of angry. Huh. She wasn’t expecting that. She could feel his package grinding against her pelvis, so she certainly wasn’t mad about anything. A package that was quickly hardening, by the way. “Did you just tackle me?” she asked in bewilderment. She saw him swallow as his eyes flew over her face. “I believe I did, yes.” Their position on the ground was far too sexual—not that she was doing anything about it. His upper body was hovering over hers so as not to crush her, but their lower bodies were in close contact. Very close contact. She cleared her throat. “Why?” “Because you were about to become a casualty,” he whispered. “I saved your life.” “My hero.” She’d meant it to sound sarcastic. But her voice came out a lot huskier than she’d intended. He noticed. His eyes darkened in response. Everything below her belly clenched with need, a reaction that his own body mirrored. She felt him grow thick against her thigh, and though he didn’t say anything, she knew they were both aware of what was happening south of the border. “And you’re still on top of me, why?” “Because part of me is quite comfortable here,” he admitted. “And a different part of me is about to be in a world of pain once I move. I’m trying to decide which part I should listen to.” “Do I get a say in this?” He gave a small thrust of his hips against her, making her gasp. One quick grind that allowed her to feel the full extent of his manhood in all of its stiff glory. She was a goner. His eyelids lowered to half-mast as he took in her reaction. “Do you want a say in this?”

A slow, sultry blues number filled the room. “Come here.” His tone had turned suddenly serious.
She was no stranger to slow dancing, having danced with John at many formal events, so when he took her in his arms, they were able to move effortlessly together. She arched her back at one point, enjoying the feeling of fluidity in her body, and when she straightened up, he pulled her tightly to him, his warm breath tickling her neck. She kept her head next to his, breathing in his smell, a potent mix of soap and musk. With his beard against her cheek and his body pressed against hers, she became lost in the moment. Lost, when he gently ran his lips along her bare shoulder. Lost, when he murmured her name with desperate yearning in his voice. Lost, when he grew hard.
They barely moved to the music. Only their hips swayed, his erection straining against the seam of his pants, causing a hunger inside her that had been absent for so long. A hunger she thought she’d never feel again.
“Liz, look at me,” he whispered.
When she did, he lowered his face to hers, their lips almost touching. He hesitated. And when she didn’t move, he pressed his mouth to hers, softly at first, and then he deepened the kiss when he felt her respond.
A moan escaped her and before she knew it, her hands were tangled in his hair. Their tongues teased and stroked and begged each other for more until Elizabeth felt the sharp pinch of her necklace digging into her skin. A painful reminder of John. She broke the kiss and pushed him away, leaving him with a dazed expression.
“I can’t do this. I’m sorry.”
Taking the coward’s way out, she left Devan standing alone and ran up the stairs to her bedroom. The last sound she heard was of shattering glass.
He wants her. She’s off limits. That’s the deal. But once the deal is fulfilled, all bets are off.
Can a mercurial artist bring color and passion back to a grieving widow’s world?
Sometimes what brings a couple together can be the very thing that tears them apart.
